Labor and religion have long been two dominant themes in Israeli society: sometimes clashing, sometimes independent, and sometimes, as in this poster, converging into a single ideal. Using the motto “Torah and Labor” (תורה ועבודה), the poster skillfully employs visual imagery to proclaim the ideals of socialism and to portray itself as a party of the people—men, women, and children—all united in the desire to build up the new country while yet preserving the tenets of the Jewish religion.
